Grandmaster Wesley So played to another draw Monday (Tuesday in Manila) in round three of the 71st Corus Chess Tournament, this time against FM Anish Giri of Russia at the De Moriaan Community Centre in Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands.

According to a report posted on SportsNews.ph, it was the second draw for the 15-year-old So who won a smashing win over GM Friso Nijober of the Netherlands in the first round Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

So first split the point with GM Oleg Romanishin of Ukraine in the second round.

Overall, So has a three-round aggregate of two points, half a point behind GM Eduardo Iturrizaga of Venezuela and IM Manuel Bosboom of Netherlands.

Next up is fourth seed GM Abhijeet Gupta (ELO 2569) of India.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay said So’s performance after three rounds is good enough.

“One win and two draws are satisfactory enough for Wesley,” said Pichay, who was credited for So’s meteoric rise as the world’s ninth highest-rated junior player.

So, the country’s highest-ever rated player with an ELO rating of 2627, is the top seed in the 14 player-field with an average rating of 2521.

"Pangarap ko pong makaabot ng 2700 ELO rating points,” So earlier said.

A player beyond the 2700 ELO barrier is called a Hydra GM, which is a higher Super GM.

So and Mark Paragua (2621 ELO in 2006) are the only Filipinos who have reached the 2600 barrier.
