The RP chess team dropped a humiliating 0.5-3.5 loss to the Netherlands yesterday in the eighth round of the 38th World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany despite GM Wesley So's (2610) draw against super GM Jan Smeets (2604).

The result left the Filipinos, backed up by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), with only nine (9) match points after eight outings, for a share of the 43rd to 61st places in the company of ninth round opponent Czech Republic, which bowed to Norway, 1-3.

Come-backing GM Bong Villamayor (2468) bowed to Super GM Loek Van Wely (2618) on board 1, national champion IM John Paul Gomez (2519) succumbed to Super GM Daniel Stellawagen (2605) on board 3 and GM Darwin Laylo (2507) yielded to GM Jan Werle (2582) on board 4 resulting in the country’s most embarrassing loss in the biennial tournament.

The Nationals are looking to surpass their 44th place finish during the 2006 edition in Turin, Italy.

Defending men's champion Armenia demolished France, 3.5-0.5, for fifteen (15) match points to strengthen its bid of topping again the most prestigious chess team event in the world, organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Meanwhile, the Philippine women’s team salvaged a, 2-2 draw against the Dominican Republic to raise its total to eight (8) match points. They will face Brazil today.
