So wins, ties for fourth spot after 9 rounds

Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So (Elo 2577) trounced Ukrainian International Master (IM) Martyn Kravtsiv (Elo 2555) to keep Philippine flag soaring high after Monday's ninth round of the 2008 World Junior Chess Championship for Boys and Girls in Gaziantep, Turkey.

With the win, the 14-year-old Bacoor chess wizard, who holds the distinction as the world’s youngest grandmaster, raised his total to 6.5 points on account of four wins and five draws to climb into a share of 4th to 6th places along with Chinese GM Li Chao (Elo 2590) and Azerbaijan GM Eltaj Safarli (Elo 2527).

German IM Arik Braun (Elo 2533) took the solo spot in the standings with 7.5 points after beating Chinese Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Hou Yi Fan (Elo 2557) in the ninth round.

Meanwhile, England GM David Howell (Elo 2561) and Israeli GM Maxim Rodshtein (Elo 2605) toppled their respective rivals to share 2nd to 3rd spots with 7.0 points each.

Howell defeated Russian GM Ivan Popov (Elo 2549) while Rodshtein stunned Li.

In the Tuesday's tenth round, Rodshtein takes on Braun on board 1, So squares off with Howell on board 2 while Safarli battles Li on board 3.

Another Filipino entry National Master Haridas Pascua (Elo 2174) suffered his second consecutive setback to Lithuanian (Fide Master) FM Matas Narmontas (Elo 2369) to remain at 4.0 points. He will next face Israeli FM Gudmundur Kjartansson (Elo 2328) in the next round.
