Donaire eyes Tijuana tiff with 'Cobra' fight off

Nonito Donaire Jr.Nonito Donaire Jr. is now hoping to land a fight in Tijuana, Mexico later this month after his manager, Cameron Dunkin, pulled him out of his original title defense against Raul “Cobra” Martinez at the Araneta Coliseum.

Donaire, the reigning IBF and IBO flyweight champion, was supposed to defend his titles against the undefeated Mexican on March 22 at the Big Dome, but the fight was suddenly moved to April 19.

Dunkin pulled Donaire out of the fight being promoted by Solar Sports and Top Rank. Brian Villoria was supposed to fight IBF light-fly champion Ulises Solis in a double-header dubbed “The Flash and The Furious.”

Dunkin is now asking Top Rank’s Bob Arum to look for another fight for Donaire.

According to www.insidesports.ph, Solar Sports had difficulty raising the sponsorship money that could have amounted to $500,000 or P25 million. Setting a new date was no assurance that it would push through.

The Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton fight on May 2 will make it even more difficult for Solar Sports to raise the sponsorship money because all the big-time advertisers would by then be focused on the Pacquiao fight.

Dunkin told www.insidesports.ph that Donaire, now in Manila after leaving his training camp in Baguio City, will continue to train under the Peñalosa brothers, Gerry and Dodie Boy, in the hope of landing a fight in Mexico.

Donaire trained at the Peñalosa gym in Mandaluyong City yesterday and said he’d be happy to be included in the Julio Cesar Chavez-Luciano Leonel Cuello fight on March 28 in Tijuana.

Donaire, whose scheduled fight against Hussein Hussein in Dubai last year was also called off at the last minute, said he’d fight anybody.
