After his recent win over Mexican German Meraz, Gerry Peñalosa called on WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez to be ready for their April 25 showdown."Be ready," Peñalosa, the reigning WBO bantamweight king, said in an article posted on PhilBoxing.com. "It's been my ultimate dream to win three world titles in different weight divisions. If I can achieve that, then maybe it's time for me to consider retirement," added Peñalosa, who also held the WBC super flyweight title years ago. Peñalosa outscored Meraz in the "Battle of the Best Bantamweights" card Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum. Judges saw it 100-89, 100-89, and 99-90 all in favor of Peñalosa. The veteran Filipino boxer failed to score a knock-out victory as Meraz kept running inside the ring after suffering a knock down in the second round. Spectators were disappointed over Meraz’s performance that PhilBoxing writer compared the Mexican to Olympic runner Usain Bolt and cyclist Lance Armstrong. “Meraz could have given Usain Bolt a run for his money in a hundred-meter dash or challenged Lance Armstrong in a bike race but boxing apparently was not a part of his itinerary for his trip to the Philippines,” he said.
