The son of a former world champion from Cebu City and an unheralded Misamis Oriental pug turned in stirring performances Thursday night to advance to the youth boys’ division finals of the Smart-Abap National Amateur Boxing Championships at the Nompac here.

Dave Peñalosa, son of former IBF flyweight and light flyweight champion Dodie Boy, sustained a fiery opening to hack out a points victory over Eduardo Edurot of Gen. Santos City, 21-6, and assure himself of at least the silver medal in the bantamweight class.

Peñalosa, who looks up to older brother Dodie Boy Jr. and only started boxing last year, showed his potential by punishing Edurot with his heavy right hand.

Dodie Boy Jr., who decided to remain as an amateur recently after the new Abap leadership pledged their all-out support to him, was also discovered in the National Open last year in Iloilo City.

Dave, 16, will meet Elijah Ray Guanzon, one of 11 boxers from the Bacolod City team of Rep. Monico Puentevella who were set to fight for gold medals late last night in this tournament supported by Smart, PLDT and the Philippine Sports Commission.

John Mark Toring of Misamis Oriental produced the upset of the tournament when he ousted World Junior Championship campaigner Welbeth Loberamis of Tagbiliran City, 22-20, in the flyweight semifinals.

Mentored by former Asian Games gold medalist Roberto Jalnaiz, Toring made a strong case for his inclusion to the national youth pool.

Meanwhile, Philippine Army is poised to dethrone Philippine Navy for the overall championship in the elite division, after 11 of its boxers reached the finals.

Charly Suarez counterpunched his way to a 19-11 victory over fellow national pool member Orlando Tacuyan Jr. of Himamaylan City.

Suarez set up a lightweight division showdown with Joegin Ladon of Philippine Navy, who beat Robert Alcala, 24-4, of Pacman-Saranggani.

Also fighting for the gold for Army were Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon (featherweight), Genebert Basadre (light welterweight), Bill Vicera (light flyweight), Rey Saludar (flyweight), Godfrey Castro (bantamweight), Delfin Boholst (middleweight), Wilfredo Lopez (welterweight), Annalisa Cruz (women’s bantamweight) and Annie Albania (women’s featherweight).
