Where’s Dodie Boy Jr.?

(WIN-LOSS: Daniel Ferreras of Bulusan, Sorsogon beat defending titlist Danilo Peña to capture the RP super flyweight boxing crown at the Ynares Sports Complex in Binangonan, Rizal on Saturday. The 20-year-old new champion is a product of the Magic Sing Boxing Stable in Laguna headed by Danny del Rosario… The Philippine Olympic Committee has refused to recognize the result of the election held by a group headed by former Tour champion Paquito Rivas on Friday because it was in violation of the national cycling charter.

That election could’ve been valid if it were held last December 2008, within the Olympic year, as mandated in the constitution and by-laws of the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (ICFP). However, the same group has reportedly committed other violations.)

EITHER he lost his way or his father did not give him permission to take the trip to Bacolod.

Maybe he did not have enough pocket money.

Whatever, this officially starts the search for Dodie Boy Peñalosa Jr., two-time national amateur boxing champion.

The talented heir to two-time world champion Dodie Boy Peñalosa has not been heard of in the current Smart National Amateur Boxing Championship.

Who knows? Maybe he’s entered in the Bacolod tournament.

But it’s a puzzle that there has been no mention of Dodie Boy Jr. in the reports emanating from that hospitable capital.

Yes, this is the same gifted simonpure who was initially christened Marvelous Pacquiao after he registered a string of sensational wins in maintaining an unbeaten record (16 wins, 10 KOs) in the amateur ranks.

Actually, Dodie Boy Jr. was scheduled to make his pro debut at the Mandaluyong Coliseum last Dec. 27.

But a last-minute call from the camp of sports patron cum laude Manny V. Pangilinan aborted that move.

Dodie Boy Jr. was instead made to take on an unprepared, overweight foe in a hurriedly assembled amateur match.

The boy won but, left with a soft and sloppy foe, he failed to draw the raves.

What came were conflicting views on his worth.

There were those who said he’s got what it takes to be great.

Others however noted his lack of defense and sharper basics.

Anyway, this is not a case of RP amateur boxing being saved by the bell.

But Dodie Boy Jr. staying in the amateurs has buoyed hopes of the MVP Group getting a better field to choose from in its well-funded preparations for the 2012 London Olympics.

For the record, WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Peñalosa, Dodie Boy Jr.’s uncle, has announced that the brilliant simonpure did not turn pro after being promised better training and solid support by the MVP people headed by Ricky Vargas, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.

If nothing is wrong with Dodie Boy Jr., then it goes without saying that he should be among the early attractions in the current Bacolod national amateur boxing festival.

As mentioned earlier, it’s easy to believe in the change they will seek during the national amateur boxing summit slated on the final day of the boxfest.

The scheduled assembly of boxing stakeholders, to repeat, could help open a bigger, brighter era in Philippine amateur boxing.

Of course, we also have to personally ask Manny V. Pangilinan, he with the Midas touch, if reports are true that they’ve refused Dodie Boy Jr.’s request for a P30,000 monthly training stipend.
