Manny firm on purse split, rejects new offer

Manny Pacquiao refused to be swayed by the threat of having his fight with Ricky Hatton called off if he continues to reject a renewed offer of a 52-48 purse split.

“The moment he gives in, all his future negotiations as a fighter will be severely affected. They won’t believe us anymore,” said the boxer’s lawyer yesterday.

Franklin Gacal said he already has a copy of the fight contract that gives Pacquiao a bigger share from the original 50-50 split that was laid down on the negotiating table.

But Pacquiao wants a little more than that – at least 55-45.

“Nakalatag na ang kontrata sa harap namin (The contract is right in front of us). Pero ayaw talaga ni Manny (But Manny doesn’t like it),” added Gacal.

“He’s the boss, and he’s the one who has to sign the contract. So, what can I do? I really don’t know. It’s already in black and white – 52-48. But Manny won’t budge,” he said.

Is there a Plan B if the fight goes off?

“I don’t know. Maybe Plan B is to fight a smaller fight,” said Gacal without mentioning any possible opponents.

Fighting Hatton could be worth at least $15 million for Pacquiao, and someone else, definitely less.

Pacquiao was back in Gen. Santos City yesterday afternoon after spending a few days in Bacolod and Cebu, and he stood firm that only a substantial change would make him sign.

In fact, he hasn’t talked to his promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, for quite some time now.

“Not even on the phone, and much more in person, because he knows that Bob Arum will lay down the same thing on the table. They haven’t spoken to each other,” Gacal added.

“No one wants to give in – not Manny, not Ricky. Once Manny accepts it at 52-48, after we demanded 60-40, wala nang mangyayari sa (nothing will come out of) future negotiations.

“Wala nang maniniwala sa atin ( Nobody would believe us). But personally I think Manny has to decide soon, as soon as Jan. 22 because we’re leaving for the US on Jan. 23,” said the lawyer.

Pacquiao wants to be at ringside during the Antonio Margarito-Shane Mosley fight on Jan. 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

It seems that a 52-48 split is the best Hatton could offer because the British superstar believes he’d be the one to bring in the money through pay-per-view shares from Britain.

His fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in December of 2007 drew 1.25 million buys in Britain, and only 800,000 in the US. The same thing could happen in a fight against Pacquiao.
