The country’s top professional boxer is ready to lend a hand in the amateur front. With the new leadership of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines expected to name its soon-to-be-established regional training centers after him, Filipino idol Manny Pacquiao, once a standout amateur in his teens, yesterday vowed to give his all-out support to the boxing body’s programs. “When it comes to boxing, I’m all out in my support,” said Pacquiao, who is backing the teams of General Santos City and Saranggani seeing action in the Smart-Abap National Amateur Boxing Championships which started yesterday. Unknown to many, Pacquiao was an aspiring amateur boxing star in the early 1990s. Pacquiao said he fought 64 times as an amateur, losing just thrice, before turning pro in 1995. “I’ll help supervise their training, give them advice and tell them the value of discipline so they could achieve what I have achieved now,” added Pacquiao when asked of his role in the training center of the Abap. Abap president Ricky Vargas said putting up the Manny Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Academy is one of the focal points of the organization’s programs in an effort to bolster the country’s chances of winning the country’s first gold medal in the London Olympics in 2012. |
