Close relatives of Floyd Mayweather Jr. said the former pound-for-pound king want to get out of retirement to challenge Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. told Grand Rapids Press reporter David Mayo that the retired pound-for-pound great expressed his desire to fight again after witnessing Pacquiao’s spectacular win over de la Hoya. "My niece said my son told her he wanted to fight Pacquiao next and that he wants me to train him for the fight," Mayweather Sr. said. The elder Mayweather was referring to her niece Janelle who was contacted by the younger Floyd last weekend. The plan, according to the Mayweathers, is to reunite their family and work as a team in preparing for Pacquiao. "I always said he was going to fight again," said Bernice Mayweather, Floyd’s grandmother. "It was just a matter of time. He was waiting until the time is right. And the time is right. I knew he was going to come out of retirement -- he did it before, didn't he?" ‘Mayweather is Pacquiao’s validation’ Local sports analyst Dennis Principe told ABS-CBN News that a Pacquiao- Mayweather will be a very interesting match up because it will pit the best pound-for-pound kings. Principe added that a Pacquiao win would mean a final validation of the Filipino’s status as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. “I believe ito na ang validation kay Manny,” he said. “Mayweather is undefeated, retired pound for pound, real American. He’s young cocky, flashy. Eto na talaga ‘yung validation.” Principe said that Pacquiao beating Mayweather will shut up the Filipino’s detractors who claimed he only beat washed out fighters such as de la Hoya, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. “Kung may nagku-question pa kung matanda na kasi si de la Hoya, matanda na si Barrera, matanda na si Morales - eto na ‘yun. Yung Mayweather fight, yun ang magaging icing on the cake kay Manny,” said Principe. Another fight analyst Ed Picson, meanwhile, said Mayweather will be a tough fight for Pacquiao since he will need a different strategy against the "pretty boy." He said the Filipino would have to summon his offensive prowess against the slick fighter like Mayweather. This, he said, won’t be easy for Pacquiao. “Mahirap talagan kalaban si Floyd Mayweather, kaya nga ‘pretty boy’ tawag d’yan e. Walang tama sa mukha eh, kaya malinis mukha n’ya e,” said Picson. |
