Erik Morales knows Manny Pacquiao too well that he can speak of the Filipino’s chances against Oscar dela Hoya."Pacquiao would get tired after six or seven rounds and will have nothing more left in him," said the three-time world champion from Mexico who fought three classic fights with Pacquiao. It formed one of the great trilogies of all time, and Morales, despite losing the last two fights of that series, hinted that Pacquiao will simply run out of gas fighting someone as big, as heavy, as talented as Dela Hoya. The 29-year-old Pacquiao jumped into the lightweight division (135 lbs) last month and knocked out David Diaz to win the WBC crown. But against Dela Hoya, he must blow himself to at least 147 lbs, the reported weight limit. Dela Hoya, on the other hand, has fought his last two fights at 150 lbs. He may or may not have difficulty making 147 lbs, but if he does, expect the 35-year-old superstar to climb the ring at around 160 lbs. Just too heavy for Pacquiao, considering that Dela Hoya, at 5’10 1/2" will also enjoy at huge advantage of close to four inches. Jose Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, was with Morales when the legendary fighter talked to the Mexican press the other day. "Pacquiao, without a doubt, is a great boxer. But he will be too small in this fight," he said of the Pacquiao-Dela Hoya fight being cooked for a Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It will be Dela Hoya’s last fight, and Sulaiman said the 1992 Olympic champion is making sure that it would be an easier fight than one pitting him against the likes of Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto. Sulaiman doubted if Pacquiao, who made his pro debut at 106 lbs more than a decade ago, will be able to carry his punch against a big, skillful fighter like Dela Hoya — as much as he did against Diaz last June 28. "Pacquiao’s power will not be there," the WBC chief told Mexican newspaper Esto. |
