Manny Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, and trainer, Freddie Roach, are back on the same page.More than a week after two men calling the shots for Pacquiao had a little verbal tussle, Roach said all’s really well between him and the Top Rank president. "I talked to Bob Arum about it and he just told me to let him do his job," Roach told a boxing website yesterday. "He’s going to try and negotiate a deal." Roach, of course, was referring to the ongoing negotiations regarding a dream showdown between Pacquiao and Oscar dela Hoya, the retiring superstar. A Dec. 6 match at the MGM Grand is being looked at although the king of pay-per-view said there’s a few other boxers he’s looking at like Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito. But more than a week ago, Arum seemed upset with statements made by Roach, referring to Dela Hoya as "older" and one "that can’t pull the trigger anymore." Arum said statements like these aren’t helping him any as he silently works with Golden Boy Promotions for the fight to push through. He asked Roach to keep quiet. "If it can be negotiated then it will happen. I definitely think my guy will win. I would never put my guy in a fight I didn’t think he could win," said Roach. Pacquiao has echoed the sentiments of his trainer. "Yes, I want Oscar. I think I can handle him. And I believe my trainer Freddie Roach because he wouldn’t put me in a fight I can’t win. Bob Arum will do the negotiating," said Pacquiao. Roach said Pacquiao, who may be good for one or two more years, should go after the biggest fights possible, and not against the likes of Humberto Soto or Edwin Valero. "At this juncture of his career, I think he’s on top of the world. He’s very motivated right now and I think he just has too much speed and he can beat Oscar. Let’s let Bob do his thing and we’ll see what happens." Pacquiao said negotiations will have to focus first on the weight limit before the bigger details, like the sharing of the pie, are tackled. "(What) we’re talking about with Oscar is at 147 and not a pound more. I think it will be to our advantage; Manny weighed 146 for his last fight so Manny is getting a little bigger so the weight’s not a problem," he added. |
