After a sterling performance in the Asian Championships in Hong Kong, the national bowlers will see action in the World Men’s Championships on August 21 to 31 in Bangkok, Thailand and in the 44th Bowling World Cup on November 7 to 15 in Hermosillo, Mexico. “We expect a tougher field in these tournaments. In the World Men’s Championships, professional bowlers will be allowed to compete with amateur bowlers,” said Valderrama. Reigning World Men’s champion Biboy Rivera, still recuperating from a knee surgery, hopes to defend his title. He ruled the Masters event in the 2006 edition in Busan, South Korea. Also seeing action in Bangkok are three-time Southeast Asian Games Masters Champion Paulo Valdez, Asian Championships trios gold medalists Chester King, Raoul Miranda and Frederick Ong, and Asian Bowling Federation Tour Philippine Leg champion Benshir Layoso. “We have increased the frequency of our training since the bowling calendar is not as busy as the summer schedule. This gives us more time working on refining the physical and mental game of the players,” added the youthful Valderrama. Spearheading the women’s team going to Mexico is Liza del Rosario, who captured the silver in the 2001 World Cup held in Pattaya, Thailand. Japanese Nachini Itakura won the gold. Joining Del Rosario in the squad are Krizziah Tabora, Marie Alexis Sy, Dyan Coronacion, Elaine Florencio and Kimberly Lao. The Philippines has seven golds, four coming from bowling Hall of Famer Paeng Nepomuceno, six silvers and three bonzes in the World Cup. The last time the Philippines won the World Cup was in 2003 courtesy of CJ Suarez in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. |
