When Philippine bowling star Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno journeyed to Wisconsin last April to receive USBC training to certify coaches, he was excited to be asked to play a role in growing the sport of bowling in his region.

Since then, Nepomuceno has been a coach on a mission, taking his new role as USBC coach and ambassador quite seriously.

"I have certified a total of 79 coaches," said Nepomuceno, 50. "They are from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Macao, China, Indonesia, Brunei, Australia and Singapore."

Nepomuceno, a sports hero and bowling legend in the Philippines who has won 118 worldwide bowling titles, has capitalized on his star power not only as a USBC certified coach and instructor, but also as a USBC Ambassador.

"Yes, I believe that I have made an impact," the left-hander said. "Not only in the Philippines and in my region but also other parts of the world by making the USBC Coaching accreditation program accessible to those athletes and coaches who wanted to take the course but had no time or had limited funds to go to the United States and get accredited.

"Also my being designated USBC International Ambassador has increased my number of invitations for exhibitions and appearances. Last year, I was invited to Milan, Italy, for an exhibition and I also conducted a clinic. I did the same in Melbourne."

"Paeng has been a model coach and ambassador for USBC can the sport of bowling," said David Garber, co-director of USBC Coaching.

Paeng is one of 21 notable names from 16 countries at USBC Headquarters in suburban Milwaukee through Saturday for the International Coach/Instructor Training seminar hosted by USBC.

Once certified, the coaches will be able to teach USBC certification courses and certify USBC coaches in their home countries and regions.

Today USBC Gold coach Rod Ross concluded the Silver presentation covering the
physical game, equipment fit and effects and ball dynamics. Tomorrow Ross will cover bowling lane surfaces, lane play, mental game, sports physiology and sports medicine.

On Thursday, coaches will receive USBC Bronze Instructor training by USBC's Rich Williams, David Garber and Bill Monce. This certification will allow them to teach Bronze coaching conferences and certify new USBC coaches in their home countries and regions. They will cover learning styles, modern bowling equipment characteristics, physical game, lane play, videotaping students and giving a lesson.

Friday the coaches will be on the lanes in the USBC Specifications and Certification center getting hands on experience with exclusive new coaching technologies being developed by USBC.

The training seminar concludes on Saturday with the coaches working with students on the lanes at a local bowling center.
