MANILA, Philippines - Six-time world champion Paeng Nepomuceno may have aged, but he’s still as sharp and deadly as before when he was the most dominant force in the local bowling world.
The 53-year-old lefty and only four-time winner of the prestigious World Cup proved this last Sunday by beating his younger rivals to bag the MBA Open Masters bowling championship at Paeng’s Midtown Bowl at Robinson’s Place Manila.
“It feels so good to be a champion again. What makes it more meaningful is it’s my 120th career victory,” the 6-foot-one Nepomuceno of Nutrilite/Amway said after holding off AMBA-FCO’s Ramil Cisneros, 247 to 221, in the finals.
Nepomuceno ruled the 10-game eliminations with 2430 pinfalls for a 243 average, while Cisneros came in second at 2411.
Charles Tee, Nikko Go and Jeff Carabeo finished third, fourth and fifth with 2408, 2369 and 2366, respectively.
Carabeo won the first shootout match with 257 against Tee’s 236 and Go’s 217. But Cisneros earned a shot at Nepomuceno by whipping Carabeo, 249-217, in the second match.
Cisneros topped Nepomuceno in the first match, 240-207, but the veteran lefty regained his big touch in the extra game to frustrate his foe.

All six members of the Philippine women’s bowling team faltered in the opening singles event of the World Women’s Tenpin Bowling Championships Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Philippine team coach Jojo Canare, who is also making her debut as the squad’s mentor, said opening day jitters and the unexpected cooler conditions affected her wards’ game. “Our girls were struck by first-day jitters, but I believe that’s normal. And the air-conditioning was cooler than our official practice the previous day. The cooler conditions somewhat also upset their rhythm and they were unable to adjust right away." Veteran Liza Del Rosario became the top performer among the RP bets but her six-game series of 1251 pinfalls, for a 208.5 average, was good enough for 42nd place overall. Del Rosario was 110 pins behind leader Stefanie Nation as the hosts’ top bet shot a 1361 for a sizzling 226.8 average. |

THE country’s leading bowlers are back in training as they gear up for two major international tournaments, RP head coach Nico Valderrama announced Friday.
After a sterling performance in the Asian Championships in Hong Kong, the national bowlers will see action in the World Men’s Championships on August 21 to 31 in Bangkok, Thailand and in the 44th Bowling World Cup on November 7 to 15 in Hermosillo, Mexico.
“We expect a tougher field in these tournaments. In the World Men’s Championships, professional bowlers will be allowed to compete with amateur bowlers,” said Valderrama.
