THE country’s leading bowlers are back in training as they gear up for two major international tournaments, RP head coach Nico Valderrama announced Friday.

After a sterling performance in the Asian Championships in Hong Kong, the national bowlers will see action in the World Men’s Championships on August 21 to 31 in Bangkok, Thailand and in the 44th Bowling World Cup on November 7 to 15 in Hermosillo, Mexico.

“We expect a tougher field in these tournaments. In the World Men’s Championships, professional bowlers will be allowed to compete with amateur bowlers,” said Valderrama.

PHILIPPINE Bowling Congress president Steve Hontiveros, who is also the secretary-general of the Philippine Olympic Committee, said his association is still in the process of looking for a new coaching staff and members of the national training pool.

Hontiveros said this is because his two coaches, Caloy de Leon and Jing Poblete, have both resigned following the country’s failure to produce a gold medal in bowling in the recent 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.

The bowlers actually won a single silver medal, which was a big letdown considering that they won four golds and six silver medals three years ago in the 2005 SEA Games in Manila.

Philippine bowling is counting on a fresh face to launch its bid for a new medal revolution.

Left in disarray after failing to bag a single victory in the last Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games, the Philippine Bowling Congress over the weekend tapped 26-year-old former national pool player Nico Valderrama to steer its plans for future international stints.

Already, Valderrama announced the staging of the national eliminations on March 7-11 at the Green Valley Lanes in Pasig City where top guns, including reigning world masters champion Biboy Rivera and former World Cup winner CJ Suarez, are required to take part.

When Philippine bowling star Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno journeyed to Wisconsin last April to receive USBC training to certify coaches, he was excited to be asked to play a role in growing the sport of bowling in his region.

Since then, Nepomuceno has been a coach on a mission, taking his new role as USBC coach and ambassador quite seriously.

"I have certified a total of 79 coaches," said Nepomuceno, 50. "They are from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Macao, China, Indonesia, Brunei, Australia and Singapore."
