The Philippines' Iris Ranola played big to beat defending champion Allison Fischer in their first round match at the tough US Open 9-Ball Championship at the Riverwind Casino in Norman, Oklahoma on Thursday.

Ranola, who is playing in only her second WPBA tournament, sent Fischer to the losers' bracket. Fischer had recently won the Great Lakes Classic in Michigan, defeating No. 5 seed Kelly Fischer 9-5.

The Filipina then went on to rout Aileen Dimmick 9-2 to set up a huge battle with Helena Thornfeldt in the third round.

Ranola’s win coming after a string of successes in much smaller regional tournaments was described as an exciting, hill-hill match where she and Fischer traded balls in the final game.

With the score tied at 8-8, Fischer scratched allowing Ranola who kept her nerve to clean up and score her first major triumph against one of the top stars of the women’s pool circuit.

Fischer currently lies second in the Women Players Money List while Ranola is at No. 15. Ronnie Nathanielsz
