The Whoppers jumped off to a comfortable lead before coasting along the way to a one-sided 123-110 win over Barako Bull Wednesday night that arrested their two-game losing streak in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. Arwind Santos topscored with 22 points and nine rebounds, while five other players submitted double-digit output in scoring as Burger King improved to 3-2 overall on the eve of Guiao’s 50th birthday. The Whoppers led by as large as 28 points early in the fourth quarter (102-74) on a triple by Wynne Arboleda, allowing them the luxury of resting import Shawn Daniels the entire final period.
The match up marked the first time that Guiao met his ex-ball club since he quit as head coach of the Energy Boosters in the off-season. And although he admitted that there were some "emotions" involved in the game, it was just unfortunate for Barako Bull to meet an in-form Burger King squad. "We just had an extra-ordinary good night," said Guiao, who turns "golden" Thursday. “I guess we were able to run our transition today. Everybody that came off the bench delivered. We just tried to treat this game as another game we have to play, the emotions (are there) having coached the other team for nine years." Santos, who failed to start after his pair of uniforms was stolen, shot 9-of-19 from the field. Gary David contributed 18 points and Erick Rodriguez, Cholo Villanueva, Marvin Cruz and Daniels – who also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds – each chipped in 12 points. Cornelius "Scooter" McFadgon had a game-high 31 points and Gabby Espinas had 25 points and 10 rebounds while Paolo Hubalde added 12 markers for the Barako Bull, which suffered its second straight defeat and fourth overall in five outings. It was a huge win for the Whoppers after losing what looked like a won game against Talk`N Text last Saturday where they squandered a 22-point lead to drop a 117-114 decision. Tags: PBA |
