Abanilla joins SMB’s coaching staff

San Miguel BeermenGee Abanilla, Yeng Guiao and the Pumaren brothers’ – Derick and Franz – long-time protégé, has now found a new home with the San Miguel Beermen.

Abanilla will join a bumper cast of Siot Tanquincen’s assistant coaches in the Beermen’s fold headed by Pido Jarencio, Biboy Ravanes, Freddie Abuda and former NBA superstar Alton Lister.

Guiao has been trying to recruit Abanilla to join him in Burger King but his former understudy was still tied up with Red Bull at that time.

The fiery mentor, who is also the RP men’s basketball team coach in the coming Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) tournament and the much-awaited FIBA Asia Men’s Basketball Championship, resigned as Red Bull’s coach early this year.

“I was trying to get him (Abanilla) but he was still under contract with Red Bull," said Guiao. “But I’m happy for him. He will be a big help to any squad. He has been a good assistant and capable of even assuming the head coaching post to any team now."
