PBA turns ‘inter-intra’ for Fiesta conferenceThe Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will return to the inter-intra format when the 2009 Motolite Fiesta Conference kicks off next week in Dumaguete City.

According to www.PBA.ph, All-Filipino champion Talk `N Text will banner Group B while heads Group A. The classification was based on each team’s respective rankings in the eliminations of the just-concluded KFC Philippine Cup conference.

Joining Alaska in Group A are Rain or Shine, Sta. Lucia, Burger King and Coca-Cola. With TNT in Group B are San Miguel, Purefoods, Barako Bull and defending Fiesta Conference champion Barangay Ginebra.

During the elimination phase, which will run from February 28 to May 20, teams will contend with members of their group. They will also play twice with members belonging from the other group for a total of 14 games each.

The top two teams after the elimination phase will advance to the semis outright, while the rest play in the wildcard stage from May 22 to 27.

In the playoffs, the Teams No. 3 and 4 enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage over Teams No. 10 and 9, respectively. The remaining squads (No. 5 against No. 8 and No. 6 versus No. 7) figure in a do-or-die duel, with the four survivors gaining slots in the quarterfinals slated for May 29 to June 3.

The quarterfinal phase will be a best-of-three series pitting the wildcard 1 winner opposite wildcard 4, and wildcard 2 playing wildcard 3. The teams emerging victorious enter the best-of-seven semifinals.

The Final Four, set from June 5 to 19, will have the top-seeded team facing the two quarterfinal winners for the right to play in the best-of-seven Finals.

The championship series is set June 21 to July 5.
