Slingers not disbanding

It was Philippine Basketball League commissioner Chino Trinidad who broke the news to me of the Singapore Slingers’ pullout from the Australian National Basketball League.

“This is due to the financial crisis brought about by the high cost of traveling, according to the press release I got. I can’t tell though how this will affect Jason Castro’s contract with the Slingers,” Chino said.

Initially, Chino thought this might be good news for the Philippine Basketball Association, assuming that the Slingers would fold up and Jason would be free to play immediately in the local pro league when the 2009 PBA season opens this October.

But even before the new development could trigger an adrenalin rush among the PBA teams, Singapore-based investment banker Paul Monozca called from overseas to inform me that the Slingers are not disbanding.

Despite the NBL pullout, he stated in no uncertain terms that the contract between Jason and the Slingers remains intact.
