“We’re here to stay and we will be competing in the 2009-2010 season," Chua told GMANews.TV. Despite suffering financial setbacks brought about by the global economic crisis, Barako Bull is doing everything it can to continuously participate in the pro league. “I would say that we’re really proud to be in the PBA and we will stay here as long as we can," said Chua. But Chua didn’t deny the fact that the Photokina franchise has been encountering problems in maintaining the team, thus causing delays in salaries among its staff members and players. He, however, stressed that they are not turning their backs on their obligations to every member of the squad. “We’re not denying anything naman. I’m sure, hindi lang naman kami ang naka-experience ng ganito eh. We were really affected by the global crisis, but we’re doing the best we can to honor our commitment with our team members," said Chua. A member of the team, who requested anonymity, said they received a portion of their salary last week. “The players got their salaries first, then the rest of the staffers came next," said the team member. Chua said he is scheduled to meet with the coaching staff anytime this week to discuss the direction of the squad. Paolo Hubalde, Jeff Chan, Larry Rodriguez, Reed Juntilla and Gabby Espinas still have live contracts with Barako Bull while the rest of the roster will become free agents. Barako Bull coach Leo Isaac said they will make the team’s planning before the PBA Rookie Draft and discuss the best possible way to form a squad that can compete against the league’s heavyweights. |
