PBA: Off-form Gin Kings aim to get on track vs Aces

PBACrowd favorite Ginebra hopes to revive its old deadly form Friday night against Alaska as the two teams clash in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The defending champions have not been playing according to their potentials lately, losing three straight games in the import-laden meet.

“The team has not been playing well to our satisfaction," said coach Jong Uichico. “Never mind the losses that we suffered. The first thing we should do right now is to improve the flow in our game, para kung magbalikan na ang mga injured players namin, konting gaps na lang ang kailangan punan."

Already without top gun Mark Caguioa, Ginebra’s line-up has further been weakened by the loss of Junthy Valenzuela. Valenzuela is expected to miss the tournament for one more month.

But the Gin Kings’ woes don’t stop there. Erik Menk, Ginebra’s only legitimate center, and Sunday Salvacion are doubtful starters after incurring sprains during workouts.

This will be Ginebra’s second game in three nights. Last Wednesday, it went down to Rain or Shine, a team they used to beat with relative ease in the past, in a 107-93 decision.

Although carrying the same record as Ginebra, Alaska is in a different situation.

It appears to have found its winning ways after Rossell Ellis arrived in town and led the Aces to a 94-84 win over Purefoods last Saturday.

That’s another bad news for the Gin Kings, who will now have problems matching up with Ellis, who scored 26 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and issued six assists in his debut.

“They found the right import," said Uichico of the Aces. “One little change can really turn a team around. Now we have to try to stop Ellis."

Burger King, meantime, goes for a second straight victory and fourth overall when it tackles Coca-Cola in the opener.

The Whoppers have just beaten Barako Bull, the team coach Yeng Guiao formerly mentors, in a one-sided contest, 123-110.

That triumph snapped back-to-back losses and put the ball club formerly known as Air21 right on track again

Coca-Cola is one of four teams with only one win in this season-ending tournament. The Tigers dropped a 106-96 game to league-leading San Miguel Beer last March 15 in a match where they were uncharacteristically outrebounded big time, 59-39.
