TO the shoulders of Franz Pumaren now lies the task of reclaiming the lost glory in Philippine youth basketball.

Yesterday, the multi-titled collegiate coach left for Tehran, Iran, along with his dirty dozen that will face stiff competition in the Fiba Asian Youth Championship slated Aug. 28 to Sept. 5.

It has been nearly three decades since the Philippines last won an Asian youth title with American coach Ron Jacobs then calling the shots for the National. Pumaren was a member of that squad that also has several young talented players like Hector Calma and the late Alfie Almario.

The short walk from the Philippine ambassador’s office to the labor attaché’s office was pure agony, even if it was only a few meters away.

The Sta. Lucia Realtors, 2007-2008 PBA All-Filipino champion, had paid a courtesy call on Philippine Ambassador to Bahrain Ed Maglaya then proceeded to the office next door where about 60 runaway OFWs were being sheltered.

Ambassador Maglaya said the OFWs, all female, usually get into trouble because they enter the country illegally. Consequently they are stranded.

The visiting Realtors were there to cheer them up and give away phone cards so they could call their families back home.

THE Sea Lions of Olivarez College exploited the absence of veteran point guard Rex Leynes, posting an 81-74 upset of the defending champion St. Francis of Assisi College Doves yesterday in the 7th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) men’s basketball tournament at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Sports Center.

Without Leynes, the Sea Lions scored easy baskets after forcing the Doves to turnovers in the second half en route to their second win in three games.

Marlon Vizcarra finished with 19 points as he led the Sea Lions to their first-ever win over the Doves in seven years.

THE 2007 Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference champion Alaska Aces showed that they want to bounce back from an early exit this conference by signing up key players Reynel Hugnatan and Tony de la Cruz to two-year contracts and are close to signing John Ferriols.

Alaska management was mum on the terms of the pact but sources within the PBA said De la Cruz got the maximum term of P8.4 million for two years while Hugnatan got slightly less at P8.1 million.

The Aces, who were eliminated early this conference, plan to bounce back this coming PBA All-Filipino Conference but do not see any players in the coming draft on Aug. 30 who could immediately improve their team.
