Defending champion STI College and five-time titlist University of Manila collide on Friday on the hardcourt as the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) unveils its 8th season with a big 12-member roster at the Rizal Coliseum.

The Olympians, though, will be missing the services of at least four architects of their triumphant 2007 season—Dexter Micutuan, Raymond Tiongco, Mark Balneg and Howard Flor. Only Ramon Mabayo was retained of last year’s starting five for STI which defeated UM in the finals.

The Hawks, who will be handled by veteran coach Francis Rodriguez, are leaning on stalwarts Onofre Napiza and Russen Assuncion.

Opening rites will begin at 8:08 a.m. in a homage to the Beijing Games.

“It’s 8-8-8-8-8 for Naascu, following the lead of the Beijing Olympics on its 8-8-8,” said NAASCU president Dr. Jay Adalem of St. Clare College of Caloocan.

New member schools Informatics and Lyceum of Subic Bay raised the league membership to 12. Also entered are AMA Computer College, University of Makati, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay, New Era, Centro Escolar, Holy Angel-Pampanga and San Sebastian-Cavite.

BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan is the guest of honor with chair Gov. Oscar Moreno as keynote speaker. The search for Mr. and Ms. NAASCU is among the inaugural highlights.
